Epiphany AD 2024
On Epiphany, according to the tradition of the Church, three events in the life of Christ are remembered: the arriving of the Magi from the Orient to worship the Christ Child, the baptism of Jesus, and Christ’s first miracle at the wedding feast in Cana.
These three moments are not just brief stops on the earthly path of Jesus, they are events of enormous importance for the redemption of mankind.
The first of these assures us that redemption and salvation are not for the chosen people or the few, but for all nations. According to ancient tradition, the three Magi-Kings represented the three continents: Asia, Africa and Europe. This means that in their person all the nations of the world came to worship the Christ Child. The Morning Star of redemption has appeared to all mankind.
At the baptism of Jesus, St. John the Baptist said of Him: „Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.“ Jesus needed neither repentance nor baptism. His baptism was a sign of His solidarity with us, by which we may know that the holy and sinless Son of God has come to take away the sin of all people to carry it on the cross of Calvary, wash us clean with His precious blood, and reconcile us to God.
At the wedding feast in Cana, Jesus turned water into wine, showing that He had come to make all things new. God has given us a new beginning and hope in His Only Begotten Son. Jesus Christ has come to give us a new life beyond anything we can even dream of.
Christ has appeared! Come, let us worship Him!
